This fucking clown has been discussed here before but it's been a while. I think when he was discussed here before he was mostly taken as a joke because he was always running his mouth about being a champ when he's never really done ****.

But now his big claim to fame is approaching random people at different gyms and asking if they want to do some light sparring. As soon as they get the gloves on he beats the **** out of him. This dude is a real sack of ****.

He also sparred Floyd Mayweather Sr. Floyd dropped him and then Zelenoff sucker punched him, only to get a beatdown from someone else for his troubles. That encounter is included in the video below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOJqm7Vty6w

He also got completely trashed by Deontay Wilder a couple years ago after shooting off at the mouth.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK22F4DGAL8

Despite getting his ass handed to him every time he steps in front of a real fighter, this crazy bastard is not deterred. He's completely delusional and seems to believe he's some kind of champion.

I'm not sure how he is not in prison right now.

First may I introduce Lamar Gant:

Quote:

Gant set his first world record in 1974 by deadlifting 524.5 pounds (238 kg) at a bodyweight of 123 pounds (56 kg) at the Flint Olympian Games.
In 1985, he became the first person to deadlift five times his own bodyweight - a feat still unmatched - lifting 661 pounds (300 kg) at a bodyweight of 132 pounds (60 kg).
He holds the world records for deadlifting in both the 123- and 132-pound weight classes.[3]
His best lifts at 123 pounds are 314 pounds (142 kg) RAW bench press and 638 pounds (289 kg) deadlift; at 132 pounds are 595 pounds (270 kg) squat 615 pounds (279 kg) (in training), 352.5 pounds (159.9 kg) RAW bench press, and 688 pounds (312 kg) deadlift.

People tend to put a lot of importance on posture, so let's look at some evidence and anecdotes.

Knife Defense Scenario Sparring

$

My HEMA group normally trains sword and staffs but today we had a free sparring session where we got to spar with whatever we wanted against whoever we wanted.

I love what we do but it has a rather limited real world application so I decided to use this time to try out a few scenarios involving knives.

First I tried hand to hand vs knife (CS synthetic). The parameters I set were any slash or thrust I received counted as me losing and the knife wielder lost if I managed to punch them in the face or grapple them to the floor.

Tried this 5 times. I gave it a bloody good shot, good evading, landed some low leg kicks, nearly kicked the knife out of their hand and managed to close in to grappling range a couple of times. Wasn't good enough however, I still lost every time. Had it been real I probably would have killed him twice but would have bled out shortly after.

Next up we tried sword vs cane. Rules we used for this were knife attack is an instant kill but the cane needed to hit with a high enough intensity that it would realistically slow the person down enough for you to follow up and incapacitate them (heavy padding was used for this).

We did this both ways around, I won 5 times in a row with the cane, not remotely challenging. Utilise your reach, don't let them close in and hit them hard in the head till they stop fighting. Due to our training my partner was using the cane too much like a sword, slashing, draw cutting, high speed but little power etc. After explaining a few things and making sure he knew I was OK being struck hard he won the next 3 with no issue. Seriously considering custom making a cane for self defence after that!

Finally we did some 2 vs 1 sparring with the single person using a knife. Video below:

It's worth noting that HEMA is generally point based for genuine safety reasons so most people I train with don't have an MMA mindset. For that reason I pulled my flying kick at the end and aimed for the shoulder knowing that they would stop fighting at that point.

We had one more go after this and I managed to take control of the knife wielder's blade and choke them out just after he'd cut my mate's wrists, unfortunately the battery died so I didn't get it on film.

Seems like with a small skill gap two men can take out a knife wielder barehanded but the only opportunity you're likely to get is flying in when your mate is in the middle of getting cut up lol.

Next time I try this I'd like to use some improvised weapons/shields like bags and chairs and try out a few other tactics barehanded.

Anyone else done these types of experiments? any advice to make the sparring more realistic without being too dangerous?

"I've Got A Strong Core"

Anyone else get ruffled by this?

Having a strong core is great but it's no good if everything else is weak, kinda like having a strong table with legs which break as soon as you put anything on it.

Strange how the only strong muscle group they have just happens to be the only one not visible by looking at them.

They have no idea how well they can plank or crunch weighted because they have some kind of iron phobia, they don't do heavy sparring so they have no idea whether they can take a punch, the only "evidence" they are willing to present is a claim that they can plank for a couple of minutes with their 135lb ass which is more of a measure of endurance than strength.

When questioned these people can rarely if ever even explain the structure of the core muscles.

It seems "I've got a strong core" is almost always codeword for "I have weak legs, back, chest and arms".

Can anyone tell me based on this video if this place looks legit/worth going to?

Firstly, I apologize if this is not the right section.

So, I found a martial arts school that, according to its website seems to be what I am looking for, a place that teaches self defense, incorporates sparring and does not simply teach choreographed routines that lack pressure testing.

However, being a total noob I honestly can not tell merely by sight if someone has good technique/bad technique, if their movements are telegraphed, etc.

I was wondering if someone could look at a couple of videos from the schools youtube page and tell me if this place is worth my time.

My Wing Chun Instructor... Part 2...

$

Some years ago, in 2008, I made a post called "My Wing Chun Instructor..." Some of you guys may recall. It has since been pulled as the instructor in question, Mark Barquera, contacted a lawyer and had a cease and desist letter sent to me threatening litigation over my comments about what happened. As the old thread is no longer up and running and it was some time ago, I don't recall everything that was posted there, but I am sure I would stand by most of it. In this thread, I would like to follow up on it and bring back some of what happened years ago as well as what is going on right now.

Back in 2008, I wrote that my Wing Chun instructor of the time was "a dick" and that I was looking to train elsewhere in Phoenix. People asked me to comment on how he was a dick, so I obliged. I had been training with him for a while and he had a teaching style that was very aggressive. It didn't really matter if you were doing what he asked or not correctly, everything was always wrong. He would even make adjustments to my form, walk away, come back without me having moved an inch and readjust my whole form while yelling at me for having it wrong again. It was some ridiculous stuff for sure. He had the mindset that training under anybody else but him in any other style was a betrayal. I had commented about possibly finding an MMA gym to another classmate and they had mentioned it to him. This prompted Mark to call me on my phone and tell me that we would have "problems" if he found out I was training in anything else other than Wing Chun under him. I don't recall the exact route the conversation took anymore due to how long it's been, but essentially he gave me the impression that he was threatening me with possible violence for training in anything other than just his Wing Chun. This is what originally led me to my old post.

After some of this, I was talking in an old MySpace Group (I miss the old MySpace, honestly) with some other people about martial arts and Chris Chan's school in California came up. Mark Barquera claimed to be from Chris Chan's school, a Sifu under him. Below is a picture with Mark circled in what he told me was a picture from a mass promotion of Sifu by Chris Chan that he was a part of:

And a better view of Mark himself:

This is a more recent image from his Facebook account.

Anyway, a person I ran into from Chris Chan's school (I no longer recall his name and MySpace is such a pile of crap now that I can't even try to find him again) knew Mark when I asked him about him and contacted me via private message about him. He warned me that he was actually dangerous and stated that Mark was banned from the Chris Chan school for attempting to run over another student. Below is an old screen cap that I posted with the other person's name omitted from back in 2008:

Glad I kept old images saved in Photobucket from when all of this happened...

I posted the above screen capture in my original thread which is no longer up. Shortly after this, I received a phone call from a blocked number with a voicemail that sounded like a gun being fired 3 times. I no longer have record of this, but I also posted this in my original thread. My mind instantly jumped to the conclusion that this was mark firing a handgun over the phone. I did not have proof of it, but as an 18 year old kid who had been threatened by Mark I bluffed and reported back that I had the police track the number. Looking back, I have no idea how that would have even happened. Some people called BS on me and you guys were right. Looking back, I still suspect that I was correct about the voicemail.

The message about Mark possibly being dangerous seemed to be a legitimate warning to me. The accusations were pretty big, but Mark had a history of saying odd things like that aliens would be taking over the world and that the only survivors would be those that had become proficient in Wing Chun under him. He also had a tendency to slap students for doing things wrong. Not on the face, but to hit people in the arms and such and berate them using curse words and threatening violence for not doing things the way he wanted them done in class. Given my dealings with him up to that point, I made the decision not to train with him again.

I don't recall everything that went on in the original thread, but other students from his class at the time took the liberty of jumping on the thread and expressing that they didn't agree with my assessment of Mark being possibly dangerous or anything like that. Mark began showing up to my workplace of the time and shouting at my coworkers over my thread online. My coworkers became uncomfortable with the situation and I was asked by my boss to get things sorted out quickly with Mark. I gave him a call, got shouted at over the phone, was threatened again by being told that if I didn't retract everything I stated here on Bullshido he would "have trouble keeping the dogs on the leash" implying that he had some connection that would be coming after me. At this point, the other students of his class wanted nothing to do with me and just about anybody I told about his threats wrote me off as being full of it and spreading lies.

The thread was not removed as I had no way to take down a whole thread, but I explained what had happened and edited out all of my previous posts. This left the thread to other users to look into his background and see what they could dig up. After a while, the thread became inactive. I do recall doing a Google search of Mark Barquera by name a while after that and finding that the thread was one of the top results under his name, hanging right below his own Wing Chun website at the time. I want to say it was maybe a year or two later that I was sent a cease and desist letter by his lawyer threatening action if the entire thread didn't come down. At this point in time I was pretty much over the whole thing and asked the admin here to remove it for me so I could go back to my normal life.

After all of this, I was working in another retail store when I ran into him again. He didn't recognize me right away but I recognized him. This was after the thread had been taken down. The whole incident kind of sat oddly in my head. I still felt like he was unstable, but the direction the original thread went in definitely went too far in my mind as well with a lot of users here, including myself, going as far as to mock him pretty extensively. I decided to approach him myself and make a personal apology since I had the chance. After I approached him, and he at first did not recognize me, I brought the incident back up reminding him who I was and apologizing for how things got somewhat out of hand. Predictably, he pretty much blew up at me when he remembered who I was, told me I had come very close to being killed by some shadowy underground people, and then sort of just calmed down and accepted my apology. Hard to describe the overall reaction, he went from blowing up to calming completely down pretty quickly. He then told me I would never be allowed to train with him again (which I didn't want to anyway) but that he accepted my apology. After this point, I basically forgot about him.

In 2014, however, I became curious what he was up to and if he was still teaching Wing Chun so I decided to search for his Wing Chun school on Google. No results for his old school, so I looked him up as Sifu Mark Barquera. Found out about his school "Club Fu" which didn't have a whole lot of information on it. Then I simply searched "Mark Barquera Phoenix" to narrow down results to just the person in my city. The image results in the google search popped with a picture of his mugshot which was connected to this article:

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/...abrk/18014605/

As it turns out, Mark was apparently using Methamphetamine and staying with somebody else when he shot a woman in the head. The article goes over the full scenario. In my mind when I found this, this confirmed that it was good of me to get the heck away from him and his class. It's still creepy to think that a lot of the other students that I tried to warn that he was violent just brushed me off and believed that he was totally normal and just some great Wing Chun teacher. I've been trying to follow what happens with his court case using the AZ Court Case Lookup ever since. Not a whole lot of information to go off of there, but I'm not sure how else to see what's happening with the trial as there's no further news on this since the shooting itself.

Over the last year and a half, I've been working for a company called Community Bridges in Phoenix. We are kind of a "Ground Zero" so to speak for drug abusers and the mentally ill to seek help when they're at a low and don't know where to go or what to do to get better. I've learned a lot about drug use and mental illness. I'm no doctor, but I can't help but see parallels between Mark's personality and that of others with mental illness and addiction to Methamphetamine. I'm reminded of his personality quite a bit in my line of work which got me thinking about posting this up. At least this way anybody that remembers that whole thread can see what eventually came of Mark Barquera. Just thought I would throw this out there, this time more objectively. For my original thread I was kind of a young douchebag and used this place as an outlet to publicly mock Mark. This time, I just want to share some of what happened as a refresher and what happened down the line.

If anybody else lurking around here remembers the original thread, feel free to share what you remember. Also, if anybody has ever met mark and wants to share their experiences with him then that will surely provide an interesting look into what was going on with his whole Wing Chun operation. He sure had an odd way of teaching and some out-there things to say during his classes. If I remember any other details from speaking with him in the past I'll add them, but most of my dealings with him were a few years ago at least.

The coach later explained that the promotion wasn't legit due to a lack of black belt affiliation. This is correct per the rules, as I doubt the coach's purple belt was registered. They're flat out sending people down the ranks, then roasting them for sand bagging when they comply. However, if they insist on sticking with the promotion now they or perhaps someone in their lineage is a fraud responsible for a fake X belt. This bullshit where they refuse to recognize legit competitors, some of their best competitors clearly, because of affiliation, needs to end. It's bullshit. Look at the Sam Osman incident for more of the same.

With my violent herion addict brother yesterday. So I train in the martial arts(muay thai), and something happened the other day and I couldn't throw a punch.I was getting punched and kicked and did nothing about it but ball up and block..There was no retaliation from me, everything I learned I had forgot. It's weird..what happened? Is it just because I'm a passive person and just don't have it in me? The fear of getting hurt (which is stupid because I have eaten some pretty hard hits before)?.I always thought if I was in a situation like that, I'd fight back..But I didn't..Maybe I should be asking one of my instructors?

Looking into martial arts training for my nephews Las Vegas, NV

Hello all

My sister contacted me a few weeks ago regarding martial arts training for her kid. She lives in Las Vegas, NV, in the Henderson area. I have one nephew who is over 4 years old. The others are a bit way too young to start, but wants them to follow in her father's footsteps as he was TKD. She wants to get him involved into karate or TKD. She also doesn't want her kids developing cauliflower ears. Her husband(my brother in law) really wants him to get involved in BJJ, and says that ground/grappling is the most important. They were conflicting each other, so she called me up.

I was in Judo for a class, and we had Dustin Denes(who was amazing) as a guest instructor one evening. After rolling, I asked what art should my nephews get involved in. He was adamant that they start in a Judo club and scholastic wrestling. He said that the BJJ will come later after a person knows how to clinch, throw, and takedown. My judo instructor also agreed.

Since striking is my primary background, I believe that Western Boxing should be the first art that a young kid should learn. I feel that after one has a very good grasp on boxing, then good Okinawan Karate or Muay Thai could be added later at about 10-13yrs of age. Of course when a young person starts karate or muay thai, they should never give up boxing. I told my sister that TKD isn't as good as it was in the 1970's when our father was a black belt because of what occurred during the mid/late 1980's with it becoming a family hobby.

So the consensus is that my nephews should start training in Judo and Boxing. If there is a scholastic wrestling team, I told her to let the kids try it out as well. She mentioned a school that is a few blocks away from her house. The school is a kung fu school that also teaches kid's judo, boxing/kickboxing, escrima, and kung fu. I told her to enroll them into judo and boxing. She doesn't want them messing around with sticks, so escrima is out. I told her not to waste their time in the kid's kung fu even though it is a kung fu school. Some of CMA is valuable, but a base of boxing/judo should be a priority.

After awhile when they get older, if they are super serious about fighting, I told her that Phil Dunalp's school would be the best choice. Phil also recommended UNLV's Judo club as well. I also see that their is a Kyokushin Karate school called Shinkyokushinkai. I also found a Uechi Karate school as well nearby.

First things first. The school is called Kung Fu Academy Las Vegas, and the website is called http://www.lvshaolin.com/

Here is a video of what I would think an all around skilled kid would look like:

Here is their judo and boxing programs:

Tell me what you guys think about this school? What do you think of it and their programs? What do you think of their other programs? If you live or know about Las Vegas, are their other schools out there that are better for kids?

OK, nothing that grandiose... we DO have some talented artists in our midst (I don't count myself among them, I'm more like a 1980's Xerox machine that's low on toner and needs a new fuser). It's been done, before (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROkrrYYkUhQ). But, this one could be OURS, and it would be glorious.

I don't even know how to start such a project, other than posting this.

Sound off as to what you can contribute to such a project, and let's get this rolling? Or, deride me and get back to training.

Systemic Over Training of the Right Body Kick

$

So this is something that's been nagging at me. In any striking art I've studied - karate, muay thai, MMA - the kicking technique which gets the most attention spent on it in padwork and drilling is the right round kick to the body. It makes for a pretty easy combination to teach students - jab, cross, right kick, reset; it's easy to hold thai pads for, or one one of those big karate kick shields. Makes sense that it comes up a lot in drilling.
It is also one of the techniques that I use the least in actual practice. In terms of "bread and butter" kicks, I throw nearly as many inside leg kicks as everything else put together. If I want to work the body, I can do more damage by throwing a liver kick off the left leg. If I'm following up a one-two, I can throw the right leg kick with a much higher percentage than the right body kick. If I'm inclined to throw the right kick high, I can get a lot more bang for my buck by throwing it to the head. Body kicks put me at a higher percentage of having the leg trapped than either head or leg kicks. All in all, it just seems like (as far as round kicks go) the right body kick is the least amount of damage for the most amount of effort and risk.
So why do we keep doing this? Is my experience with striking arts simply an anomaly? Does the right body kick have some grand advantage I'm overlooking? Or is this just a totally over-esteemed technique?

So i got 2 bjj comps coming up. 1 next saturday that is white belt only round robin contest at a local mma gym that hold a comp every month (alternating from colored belts, kids and then white). It'll be my first comp where ill be competing (was at the victorian championships last weekend supporting classmates and watching everyone else).

The next comp im competing in is in 3 weeks and its an inhouse comp thats only for members of affiliated schools of the organisation my school is under.

So here is what i need an opinion on or tips. Im thinking of doing some private lessons in judo to get some practise on a few throws. Ive learn a few throws in the past and for some reason feel more comfortable standing than doing single/double leg take downs which i know well enough. There are some people who play better from the top or bottom. I prefere top as i can usually maintain the position better and i suck at sweeps.

I been doing bjj for almost 5 months and train 6-8 hours a week.
